Jumpsuits originally referred to the utilitarian one-piece garments used by parachuters and skydivers, but has come to be used as a common term for any one-piece garment with sleeves and legs.
Starting in the 1960s, the jumpsuit has made occasional appearances in common and high fashion (particularly in the 1980s), but has never been a common item of everyday wear. They retain connotations of futurism because they have been frequently featured in popular science fiction.
Jumpsuits have often been used as stage costumes in stage productions and by various singers and bands:
Pink,
Devo,
Catsuits have also been very popular..
Now normal people like you and me cannot wear such stuff, unless its a costume party or if we are performers or entertainers..
We still do have a big variety to choose from..
We have jumpsuits, playsuits and rompers..
You might be asking what the difference is between jumpsuits, rompers and playsuits. The terms are often interchanged. Basically though, jumpsuits are long, rompers are short and playsuits are casual short suits.

Tips for wearing a Jumpsuit
- Fit is everything! You don’t have to pour yourself into the one-piece like Rihanna, (actually regardless of how perfect your body is, please don’t it’s just tacky) but a sleek look helps.
- Check key fit points: waist, bum and bust. Bagging all over will kill the look. This is one look that may require the finishing touches of a tailor otherwise there is the risk of looking like a mechanic (nothing wrong with that just not very “Vogue”)
- A jumpsuit makes a statement. No need to pile on the jewels or layer on the makeup with this look.
- Jumpsuits give you a long, lean line. Add even more visual height with a heel (boots or stacked platform look best).
- Try to avoid colors like yellow and orange or even red as the can be very 'prison' wear.
- Make sure the crotch fits well and does not bag or slouch, as this is not very easily sew-able.
The types you can choose..
The universal jumpsuit..
The universal outfit can be combined with anything – from high heels to mini cocktail bag. In this case, the jumpsuit is combined with high heels and a trench coat, which represents the urban chick style.
The one shoulder look
One shoulder jumpsuits are surely one of the best red carpet’s outfits this season. Go for black one-shouldered jumpsuit as you choose well the fabrics
The satin ones are appropriate for women with perfect figure, while those made out of cotton are good for curvy figures. The one shoulder jumpsuit is also very good choice for all kind of parties, for it is unusual and eccentric.
The tweed look
The typical British tweed trend isn’t forgotten this fall. Actually it is more than updated with the jumpsuits made out of fashionable tweed. The color palette is grey and neutral, as the whole construction speaks of comfort and natural style. The silhouette is clean as it gives a typical British appeal to your wardrobe.
Casual look
The classy casual jumpsuit is actually a matter of mood. This is the main idea why so many designers have included the casual jumpsuit in their collections. Wear your jumpsuit according to your mood.
If you want a relaxing shopping tour, go for cotton jumpsuit combined with stylish mini jacket. It is a perfect example for the casual chic tendency.
80's comeback
80s are back and this isn’t just a fact. It is a statement, especially if you take a look at the latest collection of Jean Paul Gaultier and Calvin Klein. Their cocktail jumpsuits speak for glamorous fashion choice and remind us of the 80s lost glamour.
Lavish fabrics, an eccentric silhouette and unusual patterns are only part of the cocktail jumpsuits look. Lace jumpsuits are also recommendable for sexier appeal. Combine it with large jewels and you will be surely the star of the red carpets this fall.
Also..
The work jumpsuit
Should be worn in darker tones, with a tiny belt, and very serious shoes..
No accessories necessary here. Although you might want to carry something blingy in your bag (a necklace or a brooch) for drinks later.
Balloon stye
Loosely fitted at from the waist below, this get up is perfect for day wear or for shopping even.
Wear a beaded chain or best is to add a waist belt to accentuate the waist and play with shapes, giving the upper body a sculptured look and the lower body a loosely fitted balloon type look.
Printed jumpsuits
Try and keep them as simple as they are.. Do not over accessorize!
Depending ion the type of print, if it is heavily printed especially with large prints, wear just a nice pair of heels and no jewellry at all.
However if it is a tiny and lighter shade of print, you can mix and match a little.
Don't blindly follow your favorite celebs, even they get it wrong!

Dushka has tried something very innovative.. A jumpsuit is already a statement. You need not add blingy clutches, cleavage, cut outs and extra baggy pants.

Usually I am not a fan of Serena and her choice of clothes, but this is fabulous!
From the belt to the shoes to the bag and the bracelet! It actually looks pretty simplistic!

Another from Anne Hathaway.. Animal prints is one of my favorite and I go gaga for it.
But give this one a miss.. Is it me or does Anne seem to hate her shape? This getup is what a granny would wear (a partially or even fully blind one that is!)

At first look, this appears to be a gown, but its actually a jumpsuit?

IN CONCLUSION.
Jumpsuits can be worn anytime, anywhere. They’re surprisingly flattering. Wear them during the day with boots, layer with waistcoats or jackets, accessorise with a scarf. Then quickly transform the look for evening with high heels, glam jewellery and a smart clutch.”
So whether you’re nipping to the shops or having a night out on the town, if you want what all the best dressed celebs are wearing and to combine comfort with style, flexibility with flair, then a jumpsuit is the perfect outfit for you.
Always remember!
Pair with the right shoes: If your jumpsuit is ultra long, pair with flats to keep the attention on the jumpsuit.
For cropped or 3/4 length, pair with tall heels to lengthen your legs.
Accessorize: Jumpsuits can be a bit overwhelming, boring or can even look like work coveralls if you don’t accessorize properly. Break the suit up with a different colored belt around your natural waist. Statement jewelry adds some pizazz to an elegant jumpsuit. Or, to dress down your suit, wear a blazer or cardigan.
Choose the right fit: With jumpsuits, it’s really important to choose the right fit. If the suit doesn’t fit properly, you’ll have bulges in places that are not flattering. Choose a style that fits your body well, draping and hugging your curves in the right places. You don’t have to be a size 2 to wear a jumpsuit, but you do need to find the right style if you’re lucky enough to have some curves.
Choose the right fabric: This goes with finding the right fit. Fabric can make a huge difference in how the jumpsuit fits your body. Clingy fabrics like silk will hug your curves more than stiffer fabrics like denim or cotton. Even jersey is a better option if you’re looking for something a little more forgiving.
Stick with solids: Though there are a few cute patterned jumpsuits, most make you look like you’re wearing wallpaper. If you’re a newbie to jumpsuits, stick with a solid color. A black jumpsuit can easily replace your LBD.
