28

i turned 28 last monday! and here are 28 things i loved about my birthday!

1. checking into the fullerton hotel with marlon on saturday. finally, all the clues revealed! (mad props to cris for figuring out the photo!)

2. the super duper high bed in our courtyard room. i want one now!

3. the high ceilings in the room!

4. the view of the river from town, the fullerton's main restaurant. with the pretty white trellises twined with bougainvillea, it just felt so colonial and fresh and precious! hahaha. it was nice to finally be on the other side of the river and seeing the view.

5. just lazing around with a copy of eldest, the second book in the inheritance trilogy. i had been hankering for a long stretch of time to just burn through the book and i finally got it!

6. getting to wear my hot pink maison martin margiela sandal boots! i got them at the barney's warehouse sale in new york and have only worn them once. these shoes make me feel like a million bucks!

7. the beautiful fullerton all lit up in the evening!

8. just having the esplanade across the road :)

9. a surprising sight from home... an ifugao dance at the esplanade lobby! it turned out to be a dance troupe from a university in tarlac, flown in for the singapore dance festival.

10. fantastic orchestra seats to dunas, a performance by flamenca maria pages and contemporary dance artist sidi larbi cherkaoui, to music by composer szymon brzoska. again, care of my hubby!

11. MARIA PAGES. OMG. the goddess of flamenco. powerful, regal, passionate and completely committed. there were really no words to describe her dancing. i must have cried at least 3 or 4 times during the performance. i really had no idea i could be moved to such an extent by a dancer.

11. SIDI LARBI CHERKAOUI. beautiful, inventive, honest and just so totally free. this artist can do amazing things with staging and production, surpassed only by the things he can do with his body. one of the most jaw-dropping parts of the dance was when he literally became like flowing sand dunes, rippling and tumbling and shifting all over the desert. yung tipong sinabihan siya ng "okay. you are sand. blow around the desert. go." then he just goes "okay!" and completely transforms.

12. the music of dunas, by szymon brzoska and ruben labaniegos. a combination of western music, moroccan and arabic motifs, and flamenco... even with some early music thrown in for good measure. the perfect complement to a stunning performance. please if you ever find yourself in a city where dunas is showing, watch it.

13. the post-show dialogue with the artists, describing their journey and their creation. i loved seeing maria's personality in particular, since she can just seem so godlike and imposing when she dances. she was completely endeared to me when she described how one part of the dance was conceptualized. she clapped her hands together gleefully and cried, "i want to be a tree! can i be a tree?"

14. two words. chocolate. buffet.

15. after all that sweetness, we suddenly craved for salt. so although we agreed to forego dinner, we ordered up a big plate of fries from room service and spent the last few hours of saturday reading in bed and satisfying the munchies. mmm.

16. waking up to my wonderful hubby. :)

17. spending pretty much all of sunday at the poolside like a pair of old white rich folks, baking in the sun in lounge chairs, reading and snacking on bar food.

18. speaking of ang moh tourists, there was an old white-haired french couple i loved sneaking peeks at. when she thought no one was looking, the old lady would pinch her husband's butt. hahaha. sana maging ganun kami ni marlon.

19. speaking of marlon. his company all weekend was the cherry on my sundae, the icing on my birthday cake. :) more than once, he remarked, "i feel like it's my birthday!"

20. buffet dinner at town. did we really need another buffet? not really. it was yummy though.

21. birthday breakfast at town on monday morning, my actual birthday! where marlon presented me with my birthday presents...

22. my new braun hair iron! bad hair days begone!

23. my new set of bobbi brown makeup brushes! this will stanch my craving for makeup classes for at least a few months. good thing there's youtube!

24. mostly skiving work on my birthday. hehe.

25. the sumptuous dark chocolate opera cake the office got me for my birthday. there are so few people in the office now that everyone got to have a nice big slice and i still got to bring a full third of the cake home!

26. a tiny slice of birthday cake every day! not good for my waistline but it has certainly made me feel like the whole week was my birthday!

27. opening facebook to a flood of greetings on my wall!

28. feeling loved and happy all week! i couldn't have asked for a better way to turn another year older!

i live between concrete walls

What would you do with $4000?

Since we bought a house in 2009, we get $8000 back on our taxes at the beginning of the year! Hooray! As much as I'd love to go to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand with that money, I'm a bit too practical (bummer, right?). We've decided to put half of it towards our savings account (gotta save for a rainy day) and the other half toward our house, the best investment we could make. So, that gives me $4000 to play with :) So, what would you spend $4000 on for your house? We're thinking about kitchen improvements and our yard, but what would you do? You might have a suggestion that I never would have thought about, so please, GIVE YOUR IMPUT!!!

Low Impact Workouts and the New Mom

Pregnancy, although a natural and beautiful thing, is never easy on a woman's body. Weight gain, so necessary for a healthy pregnancy, can be extremely difficult for some women to lose. Moreover, the bladder control once generally taken for granted becomes, for many, a wistful memory. Although a healthy diet and regular pelvic floor exercises will help the new mom recover, a number of fitness programs previously enjoyed may not be possible. Read More>>

Hello everybody. Today I write for you about a woman I appreciate a lot: Angela Bowie, (or Angie). But now let’s start with some part of her bio I took from Wikipedia.com. Angela Bowie (born Mary Angela Barnett in 1949 in Cyprus) is an American cover girl, model, actress, and musician. She’s the ex- wife of musician David Bowie. She met David Bowie in 1969, at the age of 19. According to David Bowie, they met through their mutual friendship with Chinese-American record executive Dr. Calvin Mark Lee. She married Bowie one year later, on 19 March 1970 at Bromley Register Office in Beckenham Lane, Kent. On 30 May 1971, David and Angie Bowie had a son they named Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones. Zowie later preferred to be known as Joe/Joey, although now he has reverted to the name Duncan Jones. David Bowie wrote the songs "The Prettiest Star" and "Golden Years" about her. Angela often accompanied him on his international concert tours, which included the U.S., Japan and Europe. In 1973, she appeared as a guest on The Tonight Show, hosted by Johnny Carson Angela also performed on The Mike Douglas Show in early 1975 she auditioned for the leading role in the television series Wonder Woman, but the part eventually went to Lynda Carter. She also modelled for photographer Terry O'Neill. Angie and David Bowie separated after eight years of marriage and divorced on 8 February 1980, in Switzerland. She later called it "a marriage of convenience" for both, and settled for £300,000. She then began a long-term relationship with punk musician Drew Blood (real name Andrew Lipka) and, on 24 July 1980 gave birth to their daughter, Stacia Larranna Celeste Lipka, in Mendocino, California. I think that Angie is a really interesting and beautiful woman, she helped David to create his alter ego Ziggy Stardust and promote his career in the music business . Seems that a famous Rolling Stones song is dedicated to her: “ Angie” written in 1973 about a relationship he had with David Bowie's wife Angela, Jagger denies this. But the legend is still alive. She also wrote a book in 1993 “ Backstage passes: life on the wild side with David Bowie”, revealing lots of gossips about her life with the singer and with all her friends…The old photos of her family with David are very cute, if you haven’t seen it yet please take a look.

Back from Hong Kong.

Came back from Hong Kong. Yesterday. It was really shop till you drop, and it's not as cool as it sounds... sore feet. A lot of walking. Shops. Etc etc.

I like shopping there because the salespeople are great. Unlike Malaysia's. In Malaysia, most of them, especially designer shops, they tend to scan you first and decide if you're worth serving, like they're the boss. In Hong Kong, they all welcome you. That's from my point of view.

After PMR I hadn't attend school, until today.

Though it's kind of weird, because only about 30% of the whole Form 3 came to school.

The reason it was fun because Mei Yen was there. She has the most beautiful laugh ever. Er-hem.

On the return of the clumpy shoes

My piece from today's Guardian

As I walked down Oxford Street a couple of weeks ago, my eyes slid to the left and I noticed a window full of sensible shoes, and they were quite nice in a modest sort of way. But in despair I saw the sign above the entrance: Clarks, the home of regulation school sandals, the shop where I was taken by my mother to have my feet measured and x-rayed with an exciting machine that could see through to the bones.

Yet peering further, I noticed that the shop was crammed with fashionable young people trying on footwear with low heels and rounded toes. Venturing inside, this startling vision was confirmed. All around were rows and rows of shoes that looked comfortable. My feet sighed with pleasure at the sight of them. They had nice straps to hold them on and the soles were airy cushions of padded leather. There was not a single pair of what the magazines call "fierce heels", shoes inspired by Chinese footbinding, designed to cruelly entrap the toes in sharp points and elevate the heels to such heights that walking becomes a hobble. There were no bondage shoes at all. Nor were there many ballet flats, those flimsy little numbers with papery soles, sending shock waves up your spine every time your foot hits the pavement, making your calves scream.

The shoes in Clarks had low, stumpy heels. They were visitors from a strange world. But were they in fashion again now? Not a single magazine article had proclaimed the death of the uncomfortable shoe. At London fashion week, models continued to wobble along the catwalk in vertiginous platforms and there had been no reports in the financial pages of the decline of Manolo Blahnik (who refuses even to make wedges) or Christian Louboutin. Yet the shop seemed to be minting money. I sat down next to an exquisite Italian woman in the kind of skinny jeans that are artfully folded around the ankle, requiring the centuries of visual acuity only granted to a country of people who can wear beige without looking like a geography teacher. She carried a Prada bag, and dozens of shoes lay all around her as she kept trying on more and more pairs. Every time she cast one off, I moved them towards me.

Temporary insanity

ok, i'm over you na.

i guess we can live without the eco-friendly roof garden, the 4.5m-high ceilings in the master's bedroom, the front-and-rear glass facades, the loft bedroom, the accessibility to bonifacio global city.

the madness has passed. the plague is gone. i am free! i already feel millions of pesos richer less poor!

(and somewhere out there, a real estate agent sheds a tear.)
