Family day

I'm not sure why it's called Family Day as there was no family involved. Maybe it means that all the form 4 are like family or something.

We were supposed to come at 11 but it was boring for an hour or so. Waiting for people to come. Did charades.

Went off to McD in the middle of it. Jin Fye made some kick-ass cornflake cookies. Yum. A lot of people lugging DSLRs. I want one too. But technology is always unreliable. Stupid laptop's mouse AND keyboard not working properly.

Walked to McD and it was dang hot. Sweating. Was wearing black and black absorbs heat you know! Usually like white cotton tees but we were gonna get wet later so no. We were black white black white though. See!

Camwhored at the toilet. Hahhahaha. Bought 1 refillable Sprite and 4 person shared one. Damn cheapskate, right? Save money!

Went with Zhi Qi, Jin Fye and Mei Yen.

When we went back we were just in time for the splashing game. The team which loses scissors-paper-stone will get balloons fired at them. Muahahaha. Won 2 out of 3, I think. Backfired once when I throwed a balloon at Kok Leong and it didn't burst. He took my balloon and I tired snatching it back and then poop it goes.

After a few rounds all the balloons were dead and so we used flour. Yucky to get flour in the hair. The floor was also slippery and mixed with water and flour.

Then we had some snacks. I didn't get the freakin pizza. They ordered only 3. I think they earn quite some money , because RM15 for each person and more than 50 were going, so they have like 1k $$$! Good grief, I wonder what did they use it for.

Lastly there were performances. Didn't stay till the end.

And so now I am at home. Lucky those who are going MTV World Stage!

10 Signs Your Yoga Teacher Might be a Skeez

There are two kinds of yoga teachers in the world--those who are beautiful, airy, bright, and want to make the world a better place, and those who can only be described as creepy, icky, skeez balls.

Ogden: The Inappropriate Yoga Guy

This is my definition of teachers who fits into the second category:

 1. She lingers a little too long after she gives you an adjustment.

2. He puts down other teachers or schools of yoga, insisting that his is the only right method.

 3. She never says "I don't know" or "That's something you'll have to decide for yourself."

 4. He doesn't wash his hair or wear deodorant, and you think you might pass out from the stench every time he comes close to give you an adjustment.

 5. She has obvious favorites and doesn't try to distribute her attention evenly amongst all her students.

 6. He doesn't respect your body's limitations.

 7. She doesn't respect your religion, culture, or ethnic background.

 8. He is more interested in your money than your well-being.

 9. Her top shows too much cleavage or his yoga shorts are too tight.

10. She screams out verbal cues directed at you loudly so the whole class knows when you're out of alignment.

I know this is just the tip of an iceberg. Please add to the list of skeezy yoga teacher behavior by commenting below!

Narcissist

Narcissist to me is being self-obsessed. Easy to be so when no one knows you better than yourself.

I am getting the habit of taking photos in the fitting room after trying on clothes. Mirrors attract me. I cannot walk by a reflective surface without looking at it.

Surprised to realise being narcissistic can be classified as mental problem. Which is: "Narcissistic Personality Disorder". I think everyone has an inner narcissist. The word is derived from a Greek myth person called Narcissus. He fell in love in his reflection by the pond and then drowned in it.

Oh yeah. One more phone stolen. Kwok Shien's. Good grief. 4th person in our class to "kena". Freaky to know a thief lurking beneath the shadows.

Siet Yen and Yen Teng's phone got confiscated. That's better than getting stolen, though Siet Yen was upset because she could only get it back by the end of the year. During lunch there was like a freakin' meeting in the toilet. Joo Yee told Pn. Aini they brought phones or something. Everybody brings phone, what's the big deal. And Pn. Aini, she's discipline teacher and whatnot, but she herself comes late to school. Kinda hypocritical, no?

The bracelet for not swearing thing is in effect. Failed for today. Said it twice. Hard to swear when everyone around you is.

Sim Kuan changed her blog to private mood. She better let me in. Poo poo. I'm making her. Well she reads mine all the time, I want to read hers too.

School was OK today. Mei Yen kept on sniffing out snot though and she sits beside me. When your friends are sick it's like they have to take a vacation from having fun anyway. Had sore throat and didn't attend school yesterday, but it's all gone after swallowing 5 Panadols Cold & Flu.

Theng Loo punched me in the arm and Vincent helped me punch him back because we share the same surname. The Tan. :D Guys are rough, and after a while you get used to it anyway.

Ping Kuang was in his hamsap mode and kept talking about indecent shits. Was busy copying Accounts homework for being absent. Some of the things he say makes people want to slap him. A while ago he had nosebleed and a drop of it went onto my Physics book. It was at the side and so stained more than half of the pages. :(

A lot of people asking for money. When people come for money I feel like swatting them off like flies. We're students. We don't have much money to spare, OK. Civic project. Bleurgh. Buy paint to paint the school. Pay money and do the work. How rewarding. Now that I think about it, I have to stay back for 6 hours tomorrow. I want to fly off early. Family Day on Saturday.

And one more pic before signing off. :D
The ruffles of this shirt are shrunk now, need to iron them out!

5 Ways to Get More Hands-On Adjustments

Image from FunAndHealthyLifestyles.com
Imagine this scenario. I'm happily practicing Downward-Facing Dog. My teacher starts giving adjustments a couple of people away (you know the one where they lean in and press your hips back and up?). I get excited as the person on the mat next to mine gets a long adjustment because I think I'm next. YAAAY! It's my turn! And then I hear, "OK, come into Plank, Chaturanga, and Up Dog with your own breath." My teacher tip-toes to the front of the room. No adjustment for me. Disappointment, sadness, jealousy, and regret wash over me. I am devastated!

In order to keep this from happening to more innocent yoga victims out there, I've devised a five-step plan to getting more adjustments in yoga class. Try it out and let me know how it goes.

5 Ways to Get More Hands-On Adjustments

1. Fidget. A lot! Especially in Savasana (Corpse Pose). Move your head from side to side if you want a gentle, loving neck massage. Wiggle your arms for a shoulder adjustment. And so on.

2. Mess up. Remember when you were a beginner and knew nothing about alignment? Round your lower back in Down Dog. Let your knee slide past your ankle a little. Be sloppy! Teachers LOVE to fix sloppy poses. If you look like you know what you're doing they'll pass you right on by!

3. Ask for Guidance. Are you a teacher? Are you considering teacher training? Come to class early and ask your teacher if he/she would mind teaching you how to do that AMAZING adjustment you like so much. I'm sure she'd be happy to show you!

4. Try WAY too hard. Practice your straining, struggling face at home in front of a mirror. It should look hard and scrunched up (maybe a little constipated). For best results, try making this face during a seated forward bend as you tug mercilessly at your foot, determined to get your forehead to your knee. Then watch how quickly your teacher comes by to try to get you to relax.

5. Be exhausted. Let your teacher know before class that you've had a really hard day and might have to take things a little easier today. Then, when everyone else is flowing through a vinyasa take Child's Pose and don't move. I bet your teacher will come by and give you a little extra traction..

Better yet, maybe you should just pay for a massage...

Books to commute by

Since I started working in Tanjong Pagar, the central business district of Singapore, my commute to and from home has become longer. Four more stops, or at least 15 more minutes, have been tacked on to my old MRT route. Sometimes I even end up taking the bus (which I don't normally do). And because my work hours are no longer always in sync with the hubby's, I end up commuting alone more than I used to

So I started reading books on the train. They sure beat the intellectual pambalot ng isda that is the local free paper. I've managed to finish five books purely while commuting. All of them are short; the longest is Ian McEwan's Black Dogs at 221 pages.

The thing with reading on the train is that I like whatever I'm reading to be light and uncomplicated. I always see people reading heavy instructional or self-help tomes on the train to work and I always wonder how they can absorb the material properly. That said, I tried to pick books that were brief and light without sacrificing quality. So if you're looking for some light reading, all these books are highly recommended!

The first book I read on my solo commutes was this one.

It was utterly perfect: one story for every day of the workweek. I would neatly end one story at the end of my commute home and begin a fresh one the next morning. And I loved that all the stories were about music.

This book on creativity and out-of-the-box thinking would have been really inspiring and useful given the kind of work I do, but it kept reminding me about the actual work I do! I didn't find it ideal to read before or after work; maybe I'll re-read it on a sunny Saturday morning by the pool.

In Black Dogs, I finally met an Ian McEwan book that I didn't like. I felt strangely uninterested in the characters, which made the climax of the book (close to its very end, which felt like eons to get to) much less satisfying. I had such a hard time finishing it. But I did and I still haven't lost faith in this author.

I've been a huge Vonnegut fan since I first saw a battered, yellowed copy of Galapagos in my mom's bookshelf almost 10 years ago. This used copy from Green Apple in San Francisco is my latest purchase in my efforts to own all his books. It's told from the first-person perspective of Vonnegut himself, in a fictitious attempt to use controlled near-death experiences to nab interviews with dead people. He never fails to crack me up, which can make one look a little silly on the train.

Reflecting the current state of mind (a.k.a. obsession) is Ian McEwan's Amsterdam, a city that does not make its appearance in the story until the last few pages yet holds the key to the resolution of its central conflict. I had wanted to actually read about Amsterdam from beginning to end so I could start imagining myself in it, but no matter. Highly recommended.

Do you read while commuting? Any books to recommend to a fellow commuter?

5 Ways New Media Enhances My Yoga Practice

I love my computer! And, yes, there are certainly times when my yoga practice suffers because I spend too much time reading blogs, chatting with friends, or looking at random pictures on Facebook of children born to people I knew in high school. But I think the majority of the time I spend click-click-clicking away on social networking websites ultimately helps more than hinders my practice.

Here's how:

Blogging Yoga During my yoga teacher training, my teachers encouraged us to keep a journal of our practice. We were supposed to write down what poses we were working on, any questions that came to mind, any emotions that bubbled up. I didn't do it. And it wasn't until I started this blog that I realized the value in that. Just as Savasana (Corpse Pose) helps my body absorb all the energy of my physical yoga practice, blogging is what helps my mind absorb it ... and I can't believe the creativity that sometimes flows from it. It's liberating, and I'm so glad I have this outlet--a forum to share.

Twitter Tips. Almost all of my friends on Twitter are yogis. Whenever I feel like procrastinating, day or night, I can log onto Twitter and read tweets from yogis from all over the world reminding me to breathe, slow down, reconnect, and recommit to my practice. If I have a question about a pose, yoga philosophy, yoga product--whatever--I just ask and I get tons of responses almost instantly!

Facebook Frenzy. The way Facebook helps my yoga is similar to Twitter. Sometimes I see interesting yoga articles (and I always find out when one of my favoring yoga clothing companies is having a sale or giveaway). But the big difference for me on FB is that most of my friends are actually people I know personally. And sometimes the yoga is in finding compassion for all the people on my friend list that "like" Sarah Palin or have nothing better to do with their time than play Farmville.

Youtube Teachings. Sometimes the only way to learn a yoga pose is to see it. No magazine article will do when you want to learn the technique for dropping back into Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward-Facing Bow) and a myriad other complicated yoga postures. When I want to see something, I look it up on Youtube and usually find a teacher I trust has it covered.

Podcast Pearls. I love audio podcasts! And while I haven't gotten tino them much for yoga instruction, I have found a wealth of information that helps me juggle my yoga practice with my other responsibilities and just ways to enrich my life altogether. I used to listen to podcasts every day during my commute, and I also used guided meditation podcasts to jumpstart my meditation practice. But now that I work from home I take little breaks here and there to listen for 5 minutes to inspire me to keep going. If that's not yoga, I don't know what is!

How does new media to enhance your yoga practice?

Family Vacation

We left on Wednesday to drive down to St. George, and then continue on on Thursday to California (since our flight plans didn't work out for us). We got to California and went out to dinner on Thursday at Bubba Gumps Shrimp Co. It was SO yummy!!! Wish that they had one closer to us, because it was the best shrimp I'd ever had. On Friday, we went to Disneyland ALL DAY!!! Here's my mamma and me, waiting for the shuttle to the Magic Kingdom.

Here's the whole gang together at Disneyland. Dad, Mom, Chantel, Phil, Brant, Shelene, Me, Adam, Cristl, Steve, McKayla, Parker, Brynlee and Sam (plus Wyatt!). Anticipation for the day was high, and we still had all of our energy :)

We went on lots of rides, of course, but since I had a "condition", I stayed with the little ones on a lot of the more thrilling rides. Here's Adam waiting for the Star Tours ride. So handsome.

Taking a break to sit down before the parade starts. McKayla got the "royal treatment" at the Princess Boutique, thanks to Brant. She was giddy for the rest of the day as everyone called her Princess and said how pretty she looked. A couple of Asian ladies even asked to get their picture taken with her :)

Riding the horses on the carousel. One of my favorite rides, always to calm and relaxing.

Here's half of the group on Splash Mountain. This is one of the rides I couldn't go on, so I got to take pictures instead :)

We stayed late at the park and even had a late dinner at the Blue Bayou, the resturant in the middle of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

On Saturday, we went to Santa Monica beach to take in some sun.
Here's my view of the ocean :) Blocked just a little by my little guy!
Here we are at the beach, with Adam wearing his silly hat (his dad got it on the day Adam was born, so it's sentimental...can't do much about it). Nicely pale with fresh tan lines :)
Sam was so cute in his floaties :) He loved the beach, until he put it in his mouth!
We had so much fun in California, just spending time with our family and lots of laughs!

Discounted Wedding dresses

Discounted Wedding dresses

Discounted Wedding dresses

A wedding can chalk up your expenses quite a bit. One great way to save money on your wedding is to look for a wedding dress discount. Discounted wedding dresses do not mean the cheap low quality dress that's in your mind now. Instead these dresses are sold at a discounted price as in the case of online shopping stores.

When you shop online, the sellers do not need an actual brick storefront to sell their goods. That's why the dresses can be sold at a lower price. One thing you need to remember when purchasing dresses online is to stick to reputable dealers. Make sure you can contact them again in the future. If you opt to shop online, you get a chance to look at various designs and styles of gowns that you can afford.
Discounted Wedding dresses
First thing is for you to determine your needs. Do you have a theme? Do you want colored dresses? Once you determine what you need, it will be easier to narrow down your search. Discounted wedding dresses can be found for every style imaginable, from the traditional formal gowns right down to the informal dresses and even discounted designer wedding dresses.

Remember that when you spend your money on a discounted wedding dress, you are not settling for second best or lower quality. It just means that you're able to prioritize and spend your money wisely. Did you know that some dresses can be purchased at as much as an 80% discount from online stores?
Discounted Wedding dresses
That money that you save from purchasing a discounted wedding dress can be used for other things like your reception or your honeymoon. Deciding not to spend too much money on a wedding dress does not mean that you cannot be the most magnificent bride ever. Choosing a discounted wedding dress will not only save you money, it will also be fun when you can get the dress of your dreams for less.

4 Things My Nieces Taught Me about Yoga

My sister, her husband, and their two little girls (ages 4 and 15 months) visited this week so I've been pre-occupied with dress-up, bedtime stories, and princesses. Children are natural yogis, so of course I also learned a thing or two about yoga.

Here's a sampling:

1.  "We are all princesses!" The ultimate compliment coming from a 4-year-old girl. I think there's a lot of truth in it, too. We can be princesses if we make the choice to see the good in ourselves. In yoga terms, it's like saying we're all a spark of the Divine. We're all perfect just the way we are.

2. "This is my special talent--a gift from God!," announced Rosemary when she discovered that she could actually stand up in three feet of water, and thus could "swim" on her own after keeping a death grip on Aunt Erica for at least an hour. Sometimes we take for granted that simple pleasures (like the ability to swim in a pool) are pretty amazing gifts. "They should make this a part of yoga."

3. What was your favorite animal at the aquarium? "All of them!" That's right. It's impossible to choose one fish, reptile, or amphibian over another when they're all new and exciting. This is what we call "beginner's mind" in yoga. The first time you experience something, you're totally present and open to learning. You giggle with delight the first time you touch a slimy sting ray and are exhilarated when find yourself in a new backbend you've never tried. Same thing.

4. While beginner's mind brings a sense of awe and wander to things, it also introduces an element of surprise--and sometimes fear. When my nieces were scared of something--the ocean, the pool, a snake at the aquarium--they were also curious. I watched as they touched a scaly animal with the tip of one finger (testing the waters, so to speak). Then, when nothing bad happened, they would try again with a little more confidence (two fingers), and so on until their fear vanished. This is how we approach new yoga poses, and it's a smart way to approach life, too. Always testing our boundaries and limitations, but with caution and respect for the unknown.

Hi. Loaded post.

Was supposed to go to Atiqah's birthday today but something came up. Went din-din with family and Mei Yen instead. Sorry & Happy birthday if you're reading this. :(

Mei Yen wanted to go out badly because after the sitting position changed we've been a bit stressed. Boring lah. And I was going out for dinner so I asked her to follow me. :D

I think we look alike, and it's true that as you spend more time with a person you influence each other. People will believe we're sisters. Same surname somemore!

Mei Yen asked me to camwhore on this on. A mirror in F.O.S. Cheap clothes.

OK, so I was camwhoring inside of the fitting room(to see how the clothes look like). And then I shouted, "Eh, looks nice!" and Mei Yen was in the next cubicle. So she asked me to come out and see.

....AND GUESS WHAT? We picked the same clothes. Hahahahaha deja vu.

And then next we had Starbucks on-the-go. Don't usually drink Starbucks because I hate coffee and such. Mei Yen got iced latte but didn't like hers. I got green tea frappucino. Got it because I saw nigahiga on youtube talking about it(years ago). Said it look like diarrhea but tasted awesome. And it did taste pretty awesome. Except that after a while the sugar or whatever feels too much.

OK, and then in the car Mei Yen couldn't stand her drink so we decided to mix it with mine. No difference.

And yes, ultra vain post but once in a week only! :D I like how the camera lies, how it is forgiving on blemishes and imperfections. So don't trust pictures. ;]

Mei Yen wants me to post this on facebook. Lazy. Maybe later. I don't like posting pictures on facebook because I can't tell the story behind the picture. Though it's fun to tag. I don't know.

And I like that I have a bestfriend. Having a clique is fun, but I always hear about feuds within cliques.

I'm excited to magically print all my blog content into a book. MUAHAHAHA.
